NEW CISCO 79X2 and 79X5

Upon further investigation, it seems that for those who love cisco phones (you either love them [if you get them working] or hate them imho) that there is more good news:

THey have two further new phones 7965G and 7945G which are similar to the 7975G but without a touch screen; although the screen is color backlit.

7965:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/phones/ps379/products_data...

7945:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/phones/ps379/products_data...

There are additional 7962G and 7942G phones with a much higher resolution monochrome screens with the same menu functionality of the 79X5 series.

7962:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/phones/ps379/products_data...

7942:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/phones/ps379/products_data...

Guess its time for a phone rotation. Hopefully the SIP functionality/programming, etc. will be a little more friendly this time around, and hopefully we will all say ty this time to cisco!

Actually, I have (after a

Actually, I have (after a little bit of effort) a 7945 working on my Trixbox system. It was a little bit hard to get started with at first because information pertaining to the new 79x5 models is a little sparse. Any of Cisco's third-party / sip / open documentation and firmware "efforts" seem to pertain to the 7940 / 7960 models which have different config file and software requrements.

The most important step is to be sure to buy the $10 SmartNet agreement when you buy the phone. It's basically a $10 firmware download ticket, but it's really important to have because you need to update with the most current firmware with this model range. The older firmware will fail if you try to load it. Anyone can fire me an email if you need help with the firmware because I am aware of how frustrating this can be.

The second step is the confiiguration files. This is still causing me a bit of trouble because documentation is hard to find for the XML configuration file formats. From what I've been able to piece together, Cisco Unified Call Manager writes the config files for you, so there are no good annotated examples of all the possible options in the XML configuration file format. Having said all of that, there is a great post on voip-info.org that has Cisco XML configuration file examples for other models. That is how I was able to build mine. It works, but I would love to know all of my options. I would expect to have a document like this from any other device manufacturer, but this IS Cisco and they like to make you work for it a little bit. There is a great guide for the text-based configuration file formats on the Cisco 7940 / 7960 but I haven't been able to find anything for the XML format a la 7945 7965 yet in my searching.

Does anyone know where I might be able to find some more detailed config file information?

Thanks everyone,

Error Verifying Config Info

I have a 7965g, and after many hours i finally got it to update the firmware to the sip version 8.3(3). I have used configs on voip-info.org that David above says works for his 7945, however, I just get stuck at "Unprovisioned."

My tftp logs and the phone show that it is finding the mac.cnf.xml file fine, but it gives an error stating "Error Verifying Config Info". in the status messages section of the phone.

I am pretty much stuck. I am at like 10 or 11 hours fiddling with this phone when it took me honestly no more than 5 minutes of time to upgrade the firmware and register a polycom phone.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

The XML config files are the

The XML config files are the same starting from 79x1 and up. They (Cisco) don't do XML files for each model, they just use a standard one which might have more or less features regarding to the phone model it self. Don't know if you already read all the information on the link bellow but most info is there.

http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Asterisk+phone+cisco+79x1+xml+...

Check your config files for XML format errors with a XML Validator (there are many available online) (it seems the most probably).

Turn off NAT in config files and extensions (FreePBX) (same).

Try to downgrade the SIP firmware version since not always the latest version were well supported by Asterisk.

Your <loadInformation>SIP11.8-3-3S</loadInformation> tag must be exactly the version you loaded to the phones, check the filenames for this information.

Thanks for your help. I did

Thanks for your help. I did read over the troubleshooting (in fact I read that entire page), but it still is not accepting my config. I checked it with dreamweaver (didn't make it with dreamweaver though) which checked fine, and checked it again with the software mentioned on that page, which also found no errors.

I have made my own configs, taken other people's & modified, used others as is, removed certain sections i thought might cause problems, pretty much every combination I could think of. I even tried changing permissions & owners of the config file, but the phone still won't accept them.

I can't downgrade firmware cause I don't have any to downgrade too. Cisco is a pain in that regard. It was hard enough for me to get the SIP version in my hands (remember this is the 7965g).

Anything else? Don't worry about suggesting something stupid, cause I am feeling pretty humbled about now.

Thanks again,
Chris

No Expert --

Chris,

I am not expert on these, see.........
http://www.trixbox.org/forums/vendor-specific-unmoderated/linksys...
http://www.trixbox.org/forums/vendor-specific-unmoderated/linksys...

But I will PM you and e-mail address and you are welcome to send me file and I can compare it to what I have working on my 7970s right now.

Be sure to include the Defaul as well as the SEP file.

Thanks phonebuff, you have email.

As soon as i figure this out, I am going to post a whole bunch of stuff so the next person with the phone doesn't have to be so frustrated. Pretty much the only information i have found so far is that configs for other phones *should* work with this one (not that I don't believe that), but not that anyone has actually gotten one to work.

Does anyone know how to find out the reason for the "Error Verifying Config File" error. Does anyone know if the phone allows ssh by default and what the default un/pw is?

Where am I going wrong?

I'm trying to provision a 7945. It has the SIP 8.3.3SR2 firmware loaded (from Cisco's cmterm-7945_7965-sip.8-3-3SR2.zip download). I have all the files from this zip in my TFTP folder, and added the SEP.cnf.xml file. In that file I have the tag:

<loadInformation>SIP45.8-3-3SR2S</loadInformation>

I also tried:

<loadInformation>SIP45.8-3-3SR2</loadInformation>

I can see from the TFTP log that the SEP file gets sent to the phone...but that's where the process stops. The display says "Unprovisioned" and the TFTP log shows an endless load cycle of requesting and skipping the non-present CTL*** file, then requesting and loading the SEP*** file, then starting over.

What am I missing?? Does the 7945 ONLY work if you also use Cisco Call Manager??

XMLDefault.cnf.xml... do you

XMLDefault.cnf.xml... do you have it? If not, you need it.

Follow the links in this

Follow the links in this post for detailed information on the setup.

I am not sure what the exe files are. You need the.gz's then unzip them into tftpboot on the trixbox.

Are you familiar with the operation of the tftp server and are you familiar with XML syntax? If not you are in for a long ride,

Scott

If you are switching from SCCP you will need to use:

this:

term65.default

additioanlly, you will need to remember in your SEP{macaddress}.conf.xml file to delete the two lines pertaining to nat, otherwise you will kick yourself when you pull the cob of corn out of your for forgetting to do that like i did. At least we can laugh at ourselves when our phone reverts to tftp server when it should be upgrading the software :O

If you are just moving from sip to sip, you will replace term65.default to the full name of your software ie: SIP45.8-3-3SR2S

Hope this helps and enjoy the phone

7965 with Trixbox

Hi,
I have a new Cisco 7965G that I have flashed to SIP firmware 8-3-3SR2S that I can't get to register with my trixbox install. I have also tried firmware versions 8-3-5S and 8-3-2S. A sip debug shows 401 unauthorized. My first thought is that my user or pass is wrong but that does not appear to be the case. I also considered NAT issues so I've tried assigning the phone a public IP and private IP with no NAT involved with no luck. I'm just curious if anyone has run into a similar issue. If anyone has the Cisco 79x5 phones working with trixbox could you let me know what version of firmware you are using? My config is taken from the template under "Cisco 7961 with 8.3.3SR2 configuration examples" on voip-info.org. I've double checked the user and password are correct. If needed I can paste my phone config. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

this might be a simple fix:

I remember when i programmed my first 7975. THis really stuck me.

You need to delete the 2 lines dealing with Nat which look like this:

		<natEnabled>0</natEnabled>
		<natAddress></natAddress>

Additionally When reprogramming a 65 just the other day, i forgot that the phone label:

		<phoneLabel>RECEPTION </phoneLabel>

cant be more than 10 characters long or it just sits and waits and waits and waits and waits and does nothing.

Hopefully that'll fix your 65

Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks for the suggestion. My phone config doesn't have the nat settings anywhere in the config. I'll paste you my full config followed by snippets from sip.conf on the trixbox server.
(Note my server is 192.168.1.1 and my phone is getting an IP in that subnet from dhcp). Not having any tftp issues. No errors in the phone status menu:

No luck with this config. I

No luck with this config. I tried loading 8.3.4SR1S like you have in your config and everything. Is your phone behind NAT? I'm going to try putting it on a public IP as well just to make sure its not a NAT issue. I'm curious what configuration everyone is using these phones in (behind nat to a public IP, private IP on phone to private IP of server, etc).

Thanks for all the suggestions. I appreciate the help!

Just replying to myself

Just replying to myself here. I was able to get this config working on a 7965 when I hard coded a public IP to the phone so there was no nat between itself and the trixbox server. So obviously there is a nat issue with this firmware. Its too bad the older 8.2 firmware isn't available for these phones because I was able to get that working behind nat to a 79x1 and 7970.

If anyone has any ideas about the nat issue, they would be appreciated.

i run my phones on:

i run my phones on: the dhcp server trixbox module. This way, there is no nat issue. The tbm dhcp is set to assign ip addresses like: 10.10.10.100 and the tftp server is set to 10.10.10.1

this works fine, but needs to be inside the trixbox local system to work. I use a separate network for my phone system out of my second nic, which is configured in the network part of the system tab in the trixbox dashboard ie: Ethernet 1

This is certainly the cleanest setup if you dont mind running the extra cable.
