Hello I am rather new to voip but so far got tribox ce and two polycom 320 phones working between each other and a ata. All though I still have figure out this whole tftp thing with the phone yet. Does trixbox have this built in? how does the auto configuration by file work. Also on the phone when I dial the number or extension after picking up the phone I have to hit the dial button for it to go out. It also shows up on the screen with double numbers like extension 200 would be 200(200). odd huh, I am stumped on the whole having to push the button to get it to dial even though I already got dial tone. I guess its a configuration issue with the phone. I have only played around with the web interface for configuring so far. Maybe I have to use a upload config file for this to work possible.

Several things - tftp is

Several things -

tftp is included with the distribution, did you run setup-polycom before setting up the phone in the endpoint manager?

tftp is useless unless you are using the tribox as the dhcp server. You can manaully configure the phones with the tftp server address, this is a pain. If you have it setup right all you have to do is provision the phone in the endpoint manager and the plug it into the network. It will even load the newest phone firmware.

With regards to the pressing send. The dial tone is generated by the phone. Much like you cell phone there is no need for dial tone, it's simply generated to make users feel comfortable. The phone call does not start until you press send. This is when the server is even aware of the call. The phone does have a feature called a local 'dial plan' that will start the call after receiving a certain pattern of digits. With a little bit of work you can eliminate the need to press send on common calls. You can also just wait, the phone will timeout and send the calls.

If you don't want to wait you can hit the # sign at the end of dialing, the call will go through right away without having to hit send.

I highly suggest you go to the Polycom site and have a look at the user, administrator and provisioning guides for these phones. Remember you are now the PBX administrator!!!!!

Just wanted to mention

On the DHCP thing, you can use any dhcp server that you can set option 66 on. If you set option 66 to the IP address of your trixbox then the TFTP download will automatically work. The Polycoms out of the box, however, are configured to download via standard FTP so you need to change that on first boot through the server menu.

Edit: Also as he suggests - download the admin manual and have a look at the digitmap tag and I also found that a google search for polycom dialplan yielded much good information.
