Calling party Name Display on 9133i

Hi,

When I dial an extension from a 9133i (Lets say I dial extension 201), it only shows 201 displayed on the phone. It does not show the name associated with that extension. But when I dial from a Linksys phone the linksys phones show the name of the person I have dialed as well as the extension number. Which makes me believe that it is a phone related feature that grabs the name from the SIP user extension configured in freepbx.

I tried going thru all the features in 9133i GUI but could not find anything that would allow the phones to display the name of the extension being called.

Aastra Support or anyone else out there if you know how to enable this please let me know.

I have 40 9133i phones and planning on purchasing 30 for the same place and 30 more for a different place. At my current work place this feature is requested and we may not buy again for our location#2 if this feature is can't be turned on.

Thanks,

Kim

registration?

I have found with the Aastra phones that under default conditions (and not necesarily the most recent firmware!) if the TB box goes offline (of even is briefly unavailable) then the Aastra phones don't seem to re-register - so they may make calls via the pbx (as this is just sip call) but the * box does not see the Aastra phone as registered so just passed the id (201) - we usually notice this as the Aastra phones don't accept calls (or ring anyway) - normally rebooting the phone sorts out the problem.

You can kinda test the registration by just using X-Lite (or similar) with right IP address of server but wrong p/w (secret) and seeing if you get the call through & what is shown on the other end.

We don't have this issue with the Polycoms we use for 90% of extensions. Just starting testing with new firmware.

Sorry if this sounds a bit confusing, only got a few minutes to spare.

Calling party Name Display on 9133i

kimkhan: Not sure how the Linksys is getting the name info since that isn't (at least from what I've seen) ever passed back from Asterisk to the phone when placing a call.

On the Aastra, if the name is in the directory in the phone with the appropriate extension number, when you dial the number it will match and display the name. To make this work systemwide, you can have the phone pull a directory file with all of the extensions listed via tftp when the phone boots.

Linksys Logs

Hi Roger,

If you want I can try to get some logs or something while dialing an extension out of Linksys and try to see how it is getting the name informaiton.

Any idea where to start? CLI could probably give some info, right?

Linksys grabs the names from Caller ID

I've just done a test with my linksys phones. Surprisingly it was displaying the names of all the extensions I was calling. So when I was calling Kim Khan at Ext 201 it showed Kim Khan on it's display.

I then changed the name in freepbx to John Doe and dialed again to Ext 201 and it still showed Kim Khan. This made me believe that it was using the name from previously incoming calls from 201. So I made another call from 201 and then tried to call out from Linksys back to 201 and voila it changed the name to John Doe. So now when I am calling from the Linksys phone to ext 201 it is showing that I am calling John Doe at 201. That's great. For small installations this is good enough but bigger installations the Aastra directory option will be a better choice.

Still Does not work

Hi Rogermt:

I followed your instruction.

Created a csv list and named it companylist.csv and used the following format:

John Doe,201
Kim Khan,202

I then saved this file in the tftpboot directory and modified the aastra.cfg and added the following line:

directory 1: companylist.csv

Reboot the phone. The phone shows the above two names and extensions in it's directory.

But when I call from the aastra phone to ext 201, the display only shows 201 and it does not show 'John Doe' anywhere on the display.

Any idea?

I don't have access to a

I don't have access to a 9133 from where I am at the moment to compare. You definately have the idea of it right. For some reason I thought the line in the csv had more than just two fields. You could manually enter a directory entry using the phone, then log into the web gui and open the directory that the phone has saved. That should give you the correct format.

There is also something about duplicate names or numbers, where it only shows one of them. Again, I'm away from the "toy box" at the moment so I can't do too much playing!

Anyone who has this working?

I still could not get this to work. I had downloaded the phonebook directory from the Aastra GUI and then looked at the CSV format and followed the exact format to create a company directory, put the phonebook in tftpboot and rebooted the phone. The phone successfully grabbed the file but when dialing extensions still does not show the name from the phone book. Does it really work with 9133i phones?

More detail...

Here is a sample line that I just tested from my csv file:
Roger 203, 203, 1, Roger 203, private

The above sample definately works in the 9133i, HOWEVER, there is one thing I neglected to mention which is an important detail. (Sorry!) And quite honestly really limits the usefulness of the feature. The name from the phone book only shows up once the remote party answers the phone.

The 9143i phone allows the name to show up right away when dialed, but the speaker phones and overall audio in that "upgraded" model are not nearly as good as the audio in the 9133i.

If you'd like to swap 20 nearly new 9143i's that I have for 20 new or nearly new 9133i's, I'd love to take you up on the offer. The better audio quality is much more important to me than the name display! :-)
