Polycom IP330 Could not contact boot server (trixbox pro)
I have been trying to setup this phone in trixbox pro without success
it was working properly on my trixbox CE
i put the proper tftp boot server (trixbox pro) in (as per my working aastra phones)
As soon as i use the trixbox pro the phone goes into a reboot cycle could not contact boot server. Is this a username password issue?
If i turn my trixbox CE back on and repoint the tftp boot it reinstalls firmware and works
any ideas
thanks Parker
Parker,
I would make sure of the following:
1. The phone is properly configured via the web interface. Does it have an extension assigned to it?
2. Are the configuration files for the phone in /tftpboot/ on the server?
3. Check to make sure there isn't a DHCP server serving out Option 66. You can verify this by watching the xferlog of the tftp server on the PBX in /var/log/xferlog
Cheers!
Mike
1. yes the phone has an extension assigned to it
2. logged into to terminal and yes there are files created for that phone
3. don't believe dhcp server is the problem (i am an IT guy and didn't put any config in for option 66)
couple of other things i noted
the phone goes very fast from updating config to unable to contact boot server. Like it sees the server but is immediatlly rejected. I notice on the the phone there is a username and password after entering the tftp boot server. does this have any relavance?
by the way my server id is 109188 since i think you are with fonality
thanks Parker
Hey Parker,
You may need to manually program your Polycom phone to pull down the configuration files. This will vary depending on the version of firmware on your phone. You will want to look for the "Server Menu" in the Network Configuration settings in the Administrator menu of most Polycom firmware. There you will want to set the IP address of the trixbox Pro as the Upgrade Server.
Thanks!
Mike
Mike,
We installed a server yesterday for a customer and had the same issue with the IP550 phone. We installed 10 Cisco 7940 phones and 1 7941. All of these phones found the tFTP server for the updated firmware and config files and loaded them like normal. The Polycom IP550 and Linksys SPA942 did not find the tFTP server though. The DHCP server had option 150 and 66 set to the IP of the trixbox pro server which should be all that is needed.
I set the tFTP to option 66 manually on the IP550 and even told it trixbox pro server address. After saving the settings it reboots and then just as before it could not contact the boot server. There is some random username and password in the tFTP config on the phone by default but even if I delete them it still gives the same error.
I can tell from the tftp.log file that the Polycom and Linksys phones are not contacting the tFTP server at all. Any ideas as to what is causing these phones to not know where the tFTP server is?
The phones and server are all on the same VLAN.

Gasmanz,
The Polycom phones can be setup for several different protocols (HTTP, FTP, TFTP, etc). Make sure that they are using TFTP! This option is locate in the "Server Menu" of the Polycom in the same location as you set the IP address. If you set this properly and you still see no traffic in the tftp.log - then something is wrong from a networking perspective.
Thanks,
Mike
Hello there,
Have been reading this discussion wiht great interest as I am just setting up 2 Polycom 4000 IP Soundstation. Basically have the same situation and I was looking for this tftp log but cannot find it. Can someone tell me where this log is located on the Asterisk server? I looked under var/log and also looked under tftpboot directories but cannot find it. Yes I have now set up the phone to boot from the tftp. First I had to it FTP but then once I read this discussion I changed it ot tftp. I neither can locate this xfer.log file.
Mike you say the config files should be under /tftpboot directory. The Polycom also creates a /home/polycom directory where it puts things. This is confusing as now I have files in both! Is there anywhere where one can direct the Polycom to look in a certain directory?
Thanks,
John
Thanks Mike, good question that one, now we are actually at this moment using no Trixbox, we use FreePBX. Reason it was posted here was I saw the discussion and thought this basic question would apply to FreePBX but might not so will post there if no other way. Meanwhile we do more RTFM here to resolve this.
