Strange Cisco 7960 problem

Hi all, I've been having a heck of a time getting this Cisco 7960 to talk to asterisk, and I figured I'd toss a line out and see if anybody here can shed some light on this situation.

There are two problems (which are probably related):

First, once the phone is set up to TFTP down its configuration files, it does so (I can verify that the server sends them out), and then promptly reboots itself with no error message. It will repeat this loop indefinitely.

If I remove the configuration files, the phone boots just fine, and I can manually configure it with the SIP proxy address, SIP username, and SIP password, tell it to register with the SIP proxy, and reboot it. It will come up with the phone icon with the little "x" indicating that registration has failed, but according to the SIP proxy it never even tries.

Has anybody else seen this mode of failure? Is it possible that our phone is broken?

We're running release POS3-08-2, but we had the same problem with the earlier version that came installed on the phone.

Any suggestions would be of great assistance.

Re: Strange Cisco 7960 problem

It sounds like you may have something mis-configured in your tftp boot files. After you remove the files and boot the phone without tftp, is it the same version firmware as the one in your tftp directory?

I had a similar problem getting my upgrade to 8.02 because of a mis-config. Make sure your OS79XX.TXT file says P003-08-2-00 and your SIPDefault.cnf file says image_version: "P0S3-08-2-00"

Re: Strange Cisco 7960 problem

BINGO! You hit the nail on the head with that one.

I had the image_version field filled it with "P003-08-02-00", (the bootloader image) rather than "P0S3-08-2-00" (the SIP application image).

Thanks a million.

The contract is only $7.00

The contract is only $7.00 from CDW. The Cisco page over at voip-inf.org has complete steps on how to get it working.

I am very slammed, I wish I

I am very slammed, I wish I could help you. You mentioned in your PM that the phone is not for Asterisk so I would be of very little help.

I also am rubbed the wrong way that you would monopolize the already scant resources here trying to get help with a non-trixbox/Asterisk issue.

I have updated the phones using tftpd32 on a windows however I need the phone in front of me.

There is no question of the quality pf the Cisco phone over the Linksys.

As far as CDW goes I though everyone on the planet had heard of Computer Discount Warehouse www.cdw.com but then again I was talking to a lady this afternoon that never heard of Cisco, she asked me what kind of engineers they need at Cisco. Turns out she was thinking of Sysco a large food service company in the midwest. I told here I engineered the ketchup dispensers and she left me alone.

it is ast, and it is open source

it is open source, hosted PBX witha company. we dont have the ability to run our own because we are a small office. i am looking to hav my Cisco phone running the new firmware because i think there is amis config judging by what others have put. I also am not a programmer and it seems like there is alot to upgrading the firmware, its not a push button fix, and i have no idea how to do this. so if you or others could help that would be great.
