Trixbox Permanent Internet Connection
Hi All.
my apologies if a similar thread is available elsewhere, i searched but could not find any..
well, Here i am without my Trixbox PBX, you see i was running ver 2.2 and it was working for my company, we have approx 10 extensions...
i thought i will stay in touch with the latest version and i downloaded trixbox pro.
I then trashed my current box and installed 2.6 pro.
HELL what a rude awakening. WHAT A PIECE OF SH!T.
you cannot configure the box locally anymore, you have to connect to the internet and hops and pray that their server will accept your login, tried 3 times before i got in.
WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING WITH TRIXBOX??, why do you need a internet connection? Why can you not configure the system locally as with version 2.2. If you really wanted to connect your system to the community you can allow your system then to do so.
Nowhere does it state on the trixbox site how safe the connecting environment is (http://cp.trixbox.com), the communication is over http (cleartext)
If your environment get compromised what is the likeness of our equipment being compromised as well..
GUYS!!!, what the hell were your thinking.
Is there another version where i can configure my trixbox locally on my machine.
Before you fly off the handle and wipe your phone system the first thing YOU should do is know what you are doing, it's obvious you may not.
You downloaded the PRO version and no the CE version. You can still download trixbox CE 2.6.1 is the latest and if you were smart enough to have a backup of 2.2 you could possibly restore that as well.
Good luck. I think you are going to need it!
Luck for me, i have a backup copy of 2.2 and also a copy of 2.6.1
I have installed 2.6.1 and it was working well, i could not get the HUD up and running and also the ring groups were missing (still searching for it)
i can understand the concept behind the logging into the internet, i just found it strange that the local user do not have control over his, you have to do the config over the internet.
I am already reverting back, im just very disappointed.
Seem like you didn’t know what you were getting into when you tried pro. But we do consider hybrid hosted better then a local box for most installations. May uses pay extra for a remote hosted interface. You asked why anybody would this. Here are just a few advantages.
- Automatic backup – if your hard drive dies just install a new drive, a clean version of pro, and resync your configuration. Your back on-line in about 20 min.
- Manage multiple systems as if they are one. IT departments are always trying to reduce cost by not having IT staff at remote offices. With pro you can install a home system and systems in remote offices and manage them all as one system through one web interface.
- If you are a reseller you can manage your customers systems from remote as well
- You still have all the advantages of a local system. If your internet connection goes down you can still make phone calls and call 911.
- You can also install local versions of your own custom scripts to implement custom features
- Upgrades? What upgrades you just get the latest features as they are implemented
These are just a few of the advantages. More are listed on our site. Now that you have your phone system back on-line maybe you could try pro on a test system where you have more time to learn about it.
I understand that. I agree to cost and technical factor is a advantage. I am a security company and i know how vulnerable VIOP systems are,
It would have been a better design if you gave the user 2 options, complete control and hybrid hosted.
I cannot see that any large orgnisation will use this method, how do we know that the access to trixbox offices are secure, A PABS is the heart system of any company, i personally will not recommend this solution to anybody, purely of the control by a external party.
it still is sad to see trixbox going this route.
Now i have to search for another VOIP solution, i am currently on 2.6.
We have thousands of customers using pro may of them are large companies. We offer as much security as possible. All connections from Fonality to your system are through encrypted tunnels and the login page is https. Although you can use http as you found. This is mostly for browsers that don't support https. Companies have been trusting their important data to ASPs such as SalesForce.com for years. Why not a phone system? As long as reasonable security measures are taken.
In many ways a hosted interface is more secure. We can fix a security venerability on our interface instantly access our entire customer base. To fix a security bug in CE we have to wait for the user to upgrade his system.
We do of course offer trixbox CE as a prem based solution. This works well for customers who want to make heavy modifications to their system or are in countries with unreliable internet access. We will continue to offer this solution indefinitely.
Thank you for your comments.
I totally understand your reasons.
I am unfortunately fromone of those countries with unreliable internet connection.
It took me just over 5 min to configure one extension on the pro edition.
So you can think for yourself how long it will take to configure 25 users/extentions
I am not sure that you understand what everyone is saying, especially with the sales pitch on Pro tossed in for extra confusion factor.
As Kerry said Trixbox CE edition, always free, still is free. No Internet connection required.
CE has gone from 2.2 to 2.4 to 2.6x and now 2.6.1
2.2 was the last trixbox release with Asterisk 1.2, some who believe the most stable release of Asterisk.
Pro is a whole different animal. It has a free version and a bunch of pay options. There is a wealth of information including a matrix on the differences on the trixbox web sites. They link to each other however:
trixbox.org is the CE site
trixbox.com is the Pro site

I think Trixbox pro has it's place with many companies and is a good fit. Though, the Hybrid-hosted model of Trixbox Pro is NOT like salesforce.com AT ALL. Sorry. Some things come to mind: VPN from Fonality into the client's Internal network, DNS on the Trixbox (very scary security issue here), Rsync used to copy configurations from the Fonality servers to your box to make updates, etc.
I can't tell you how much this tutorial helped me. I called the guys at Hughesnet for pointers and tips and they said they never used a trixbox so they have no idea how to make the internet connection work. I should send them to this page. Maybe next time someone asks they will know how to help. Thanks again!
