SNOM M3 issues - HELP!

Sorry, there isn't a SNOM sepcific forum so thought this would be the best place to post (Noone from SNOM replies on their own forum). And yes I have tried my good friend Google!

I have over 100 SNOM M3's spread out over 17 sites with a customer. On version 0101 they use to randomly drop registration from the gateway (each site has had this happen at least once, some several times). The fix is to reset the gateway which is simple enough but annoying for our customer. We thought it would be wise to upgrade them to version 0111 to help solve this issue.

Now we have a whole new kettle of fish. Several sites are experiencing a problem where the gateway updates but the handsets get stuck on a loop and just keep trying to update. Which makes the phones unusable. No error code comes up on the LCD, only a message saying ethernet disconnected (but their network is still up and running).

Anyone out there using these phones had something similar happen or better yet, know of a fix? I'm asking the customer to roll back to the previous firmware for now until a proper fix is found. Either that or I'm ripping these SNOM's out. Think I can get a RMA for 100 M3's? :)

Fortuneately for me, I only have 3 of these. All three are exhibiting the same behaviour. I am a Snom Registered VAR and placed an inquiry on their partner website last night. I will update here as soon as I hear something. When I hear, I will point them to your post.

I only have one of these at home, and mine did it after updating the firmware. It must have cycled at least 10 times or so, but it eventually quit and has been working fine since.

Thanks for the input guys!

Good to know I'm not the only one :)

I asked the customer to check their gateway & troublesome handets and all are now on the latest firmware and seem to be working fine, despite locking up in the update cycle. I'm still a little cautious about deploying any more of these until further updates solve the issue. The trouble with having 5 or 6 at each site is that they only update one handset at a time, the other handsets wait in line and are all unusable. So just imagine all of them getting stuck for several hours. If I didn't have some Linksys deskphones at the customer sites I would have been screwed.

Thanks again for the replies. And thanks for taking this up with SNOM directly John.

Kevin.

Hey all, Snom sent me to the

Hey all,

Snom sent me to the beta firmware, 1.15, site for this phone. I have asked to release it here and will do so as soon as I hear back from them. I finished the update about 20 minutes ago and all seems well. I will leave it on overnight and by then, I hope to have heard from Snom.

nzkef, if you need it before Snom responds, send me an email. My email is on my website.

Snom M3 firmware beta

OK all, here are the instructions to update the firmware to beta 1.15 on the Snom M3.

nzkef, Dan Fitzgearld of Snom wants you to contact him. He wants to make sure this resolves your issue. You may be able to contact him on Snom's support site.

> Please update the m3 to the latest Beta firmware, 1.15.
>
> The new Beta release has enhancements, fixes and will add SIP tracing on the
> base unit.
> The firmware is Beta and is a work in progress until it is GA, probably next
> week. We are looking for feedback to validate the release.
>
> You would need copy/paste the following info into fields on the Advanced page
> in the Update section.
> Firmware server address: provisioning.snom.com
> Firmware path: /m3/beta/
>
> On the handset go to: Settings, System settings, Firmware update, select the
> 1.15 firmware and select yes to update the firmware. It will load the gateway
> then the handset, takes awhile.....

Thanks for doing the hard

Thanks for doing the hard yards John. I've been in contact with our reseller in Australia and am waiting on a response from them as well.

I've just updated the firmware on my 2 handsets at the office to the beta. Might also try this version at one of the customer's sites and see how we go.

I had a look on the Snom support website and didn't see any contact details for Dan Fitzgearld. There is a generic support email address, not sure if that's the best way to get a hold of him though?

Thanks again.

Kevin.

Kevin, That is the only

Kevin,

That is the only e-mail address for him that I have also. With the name of Dan Fitzgearld, I doubt he works in Germany. You might call their US office at 1-978-686-1531. There office is in Massachusetts, which is East coast time in the US.

Please help!

I received my first (and last) snom m3 last night.

This is a huge disappointment. I have been able to get it to make and receive calls, but nothing else works. Transfer fails. Errors. Etc.

You can't update the contact list via the web interface. That REALLY sucks.

I tried to update the firmware, after spending 2.5 hours googling to try and find out how. The firmware update function on the handset just returns "server timeout".

I had to run Wireshark to trace the packets and see what it's doing. Great documentation. Anyway, it is trying to download "dirlist.txt" from snom's tftp server, and that file does not exist at the location they say it should.

The phone came with firmware 1.07. Snom's website says 1.16 is current. The closest thing I've been able to find by crawling around their ftp server is /m3/v116/Fileformat3. This is version 1.16, I suppose, but the only language is French.

Ummmm. This is ridiculous. can anyone suggest a way to make this phone work (minimum to support attended call transfer and DTMF RFC2833). I speak english, russian and spanish. But not french.

I guess I have 30 days before I have to try and get a refund. Thanks in advance for any help. I don't mind doing the hard work if it will in fact work.

Woo Hoo, I got the firmware updated

I managed to get the firmware up to 1.16 by copying the files to a local tftp server...

The transfer problem seems to be fixed.

Then I tried to put a call on hold. When you take the call off of hold, there is only 1-way audio. If the far side puts you on hold and takes you back off hold, then 2-way audio starts again.

I tested repeatedly with multiple sip devices and it happens 100% of the time.

Back to the drawing board.

As i said in my previous

As i said in my previous post, i followed those instructions and got "server timeout".
I went to their server by hand and saw there was no "dirlist.txt" file in the expected place. Therefore those instructions cannot work without modification.

But thanks for looking for info for me.

The problem now is any calls placed on hold, or transferred, then have one-way audio. I am now on the current firmware.

and, no caller id

I just found out that the phone doesn't display caller id text.

That is the final blow. This just cannot be used for any purpose, business or home use.

It's really strange because if you look in the "call log", the caller's name is there. But it doesn't display on the screen when the phone rings. The display just says "Speakerphone: Off".

Other reviewers said this phone is great... But I don't get it.
My $30 Uniden from Best Buy blows the doors off it. And my old Uniden get's 4 times the range.

Last call

I have about 1 day left before I have to RMA my M3.

The killer problems I have are: one-way audio and handset reboots on incoming calls.
I know there is nothing we can do about the limited range problem.

Anyway, anyone have a work-around for the one-way audio problem with the M3? I found more info about it. It doesn't just happen on HOLD. You get one-way audio whenever the far end presses a DTMF key, or does any kind of "event" like hold, etc.

In other words, I can be on a call, the far end presses any number key, then I get permanent static on the M3.

I have tickets open with Snom for all of the bugs I have found, but they haven't offered any help. My 30 day window to return it is almost up.

You may have a bad batch

I have a Snom m3 gateway with 4 handsets hooked up to trixbox 2.6 and cannot reproduce any of the issues you mention.
Transferring calls works, even repeatedly. caller ID text is displayed. I have everything updated to firmware 1.16
Snom confirmed that they will release an update to the firmware sometime in September which will create the possibility of centrally provided common directory.
As far as range goes, it is fine for me. Of course as with anything RF, your location may be completely different. You can always try to relocate the gateway and get additional Snom DECT repeaters.
For what it does, I think the Snom m3 has no competitor in its price range.

Please try this

Take an M3 and call a local sip phone you have nearby. It has to be sip.

Verify you have 2-way audio.

From the hard-wired sip phone, place the call on hold.
-- do you hear music on the M3?

Take the hard-wired phone off hold.

Can you talk both ways from the hard-wired sip phone and the M3?

I have my hat ready to eat if you can! Multiple people report the exact same symptoms as me. Please try my test and report back.

Thanks for replying!

Will do it later today

As I do not have any other hardware SIP phone, it will have to be a softphone registered via SIP. Is that OK? I have Zoiper and Nokia N800 with SIP client.

Yes, a softphone will do

I tested with both an Aastra 57i and Eyebeam softphone and the problem was the same for either.

It works for me

It works for me, no problem with the music on hold nor audio both ways.
Tested with BOL Sip Phone and Zoiper, the Nokia N800 client does not have hold function.
I hear music on the Snom handset when the softphone end placed the call on hold and when taken off hold there is audio both ways. Loud and clear.
I would be more than happy to try other setups, or share with you my provisioning file privately.

That's great news

I guess I'll hold onto my M3 then.

Yes, I would love to see your configuration. Though, I don't know what could be wrong here. It is very simple, the M3 and trixbox are on the same subnet, no NAT, no firewall between them. All the other devices work, only the M3 has a problem.

M3's

My 100 M3's seem to be behaving as of late. Only slight occurrence they get is some echo problems. And 1 (yes just 1) has the reboot handset on incoming call problem. But I think it must be an environmental issue at the customer site as I replaced the handset & gateway and the same thing happened with the new one. Yet the original one works fine in my test lab.

Can't say I have the one way audio problem though. I'm on 1.16, which seems to have resolved my handset losing registration with gateway issue.

The M3's are a strange

The M3's are a strange kettle of fish. On some sites they give me no issues of note, on others they are finnikity troublesome beasts.

I too have one base unit (of three on the site) intermittantly losing registration. It's pretty annoying and there seems to be no good reason (they're all on the same, latest firmware).

They also have problems reliably sending DTMF tones... they'll work one day, then they'll not; resetting the Gateway fixes it, but only ever temporarily.

Just for the record

I recently set up an M3 with five handsets and have had no trouble out of the box with call quality and normal call features etc. That was until I tried to individually name the handsets and found that two out of the five persistently try to be a clone of each other changing the name on either handset causes the other handset to change a few seconds later.

I don't know what firmware they are running because they have not been updated since purchase. A firmware update is the next thing I'm going to try to resolve this naming issue seeing as most of you are reporting good results with the latest version.

Thanks to all for the useful information

Hi all,

Just an advice to anyone thinking about deploying M3's to customers.

A month ago I set up 7 Snom M3 (One gateway with 4 phones, another gateway with 2 phones and agateway with just one phone).

Call quality is fine, but the phones have to be rebooted almost everyday, because they loose registration with the gateway. We are using the latest firmware (1.16) but the problem persists. I don't know if it's my fault or it's a phone bug (firmware 1.16 was supposed to fix the registration problem) but definitely I'd not buy any more M3 phones.

Regards,
Ignacio.

Hi all

Good to see some more M3 users out there.

Chrism2: Regarding DTMF tones, have you gone in via the web browser interface and changed each handsets DTMF singnalling from 'inband' to 'SIP INFO'. This resolved the DTMF issue I was experiencing. Make sure you reset the gateway after making the change.

Kbedford: Try and update to the latest firmware (1.16). This makes naming individual handsets a whole lot easier.

Iverona: I was getting pretty frustrated with the handsets losing registration for a period of several months as well. But since going to 1.16 I've only had 2 go down and that was awhile ago now. Maybe I'm just unaware of the issue because my customers know to reset the gateway when it happens, but I haven't had any calls from them about it for at least a month.

For the record, I have 17 sites out there with Snom M3's, 16 of them with 6 handsets connecting to 1 gateway. I love how easy the M3's are to configure. But had you asked me 2 months ago would I deploy them again the answer would have been a resounding NO! I'll wait a couple more months monitoring my existing sites and if the registration issue is finally dead and buried then I'll think about deploying them again.

Good luck all.

I have had the problem with

I have had the problem with the handsets intermittently losing connection to the base - usually on incoming calls. I worked with their technical support - they were very responsive. Don't go to their forum, they apparently don't monitor this! They are working on a new firmware release which is due out "any day now". They had me send trace files, etc. to help diagnose - so hopefully they will have this solved soon.
