CrystalFontz displays are

CrystalFontz displays are used on the trixbox Appliance, then you can just install the lcd4linux package from the repo and it will work.

We use a USB display that

We use a USB display that has to be a particular size now because of the molding. Even so, finding cheaper displays even in bulk is pretty hard.

well.. here's the issue.. I

well.. here's the issue.. I actually looked into this a few years back for an idea i had.

You need a controller of sorts to write to the display. It can be designed and manufactured very cheaply (about $2000.00) for the design + 4-5.00 a piece if done in lots of 10000+ from china. My issue was what the hell was I gonna do with 10000 lcds? I guess I could sell them, but I have no desire to be in retail.

There are tons of designs on the internet for driving an lcd display and making one-offs for about $40.00 from Ratshack so $4-5 was about where it is if you don't mind going to china direct. There's project management involved in the whole process if you wanna do the design for the unit yourself (that's why it was so cheap).. don't forget though, you'll need to code a bit to get it all working.. but there's tons of gpl code for that stuff.

Lookup the docs on lcd4linux

Lookup the docs on lcd4linux you can use anything with a Hitachi controller. I have used it with Intel ISP 1U servers. Never motivated enough to write a script to set the IP from the LCD on first boot so you don't have to even attach a terminal to the appliance.
