Excellent QoS and Vlan guide for VOIP with netgear switches

During my google travels I happened to stumble along this PDF document. Even though it references Avaya phones the principles and concepts still carry over. This is a nice step by step to ensure you program your network correctly for VOIP.

QoS
It covers DSCP and setting ToS to leverage "ef" Expedited Forwarding (101110)

Vlans
Next it covers setting up a voice vlan and data vlan and configuring a phone so that the other ethernet port can be effectively used to connect a PC while separating the traffic. (This has always confused me a little - you should just be able to plug it in and it works right?) sure until a virus wrecks havoc on the network.

Hopefully this will help with your implementations / deployments and ensure that they are done RIGHT. The little bit of extra time you put in at the front end will save you countless hours and headaches later on

ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/netgear_avaya_ip_telephony_appn...

Avaya and Cisco have a great deal of success in deploying VOIP. A large part of this is due to setting things up correctly on the front end. Remember the more successful deployments of Asterisk based solutions there are the better the perception will be in tackling the skeptics out there. The number one rule is that it HAS to be rock solid.

Thanks,

Will

I have written numerous articles on how to setup Cisco switches for VLAN's. All I ever get is excuses of why it is not needed and people telling me how well their networks work without it.

To me it is nothing short of incompetence to install a manager switch and not configure it properly.

Properly configured an Open Source based PBX can be as reliable as the proprietary VoIP systems if it is run on the same class of hardware and network and configured properly.

Thanks for the comment.
