AsteriskNOW to support FreePBX!
Awesome.
HOWEVER the article got a couple of things wrong. It said people said Asterisk wasn't scalable. Asterisk IS scalable, but it is not EASILY scalable. It requires that you dump a lot of money on a consultant (digium) to piece together an OpenSER/Asterisk/(insert favorite SQL server here) setup and pay someone to write an administration interface for it (no, freepbx wasn't written with large, multi-server installations in mind). That is all well and good if you choose to do this, but there are better solutions out there.
Also, the bit about Nortel phones not working with sipXecs is misleading. You can make the Nortel phones work with Asterisk, but after seeing this thread you may change your mind and buy something else. Also, sipXecs DOES support LG-Nortel phones.
It will be interesting to see the competition between the sipX and asterisk camps in the coming months. sipX is going to release their next version (4.0) soon that will fulfill many requirements that asterisk users need. Interesting times are ahead.
Maybe people don't realize what this means: it means you aren't limited to the current crop of ISO installers, and this one looks promising, from both a technical standpoint and a political one (as of right now they're planning both "pure" and "plus" versions. Pure having no non-free components.)
This is good news to those of us who aren't impressed with the current FOSS telephony offerings.
I think this just makes packages like trixbox have to pull their pants up. I think it will also mean some GREAT development from all the different packages.
We've upgraded most of our customer boxes to freepbx 2.5 and it's working GREAT! We love it!
I think we're like alot of people and are still not using the trix version of freepbx and opting to keep with the freepbx version on our boxes.
I'm still a trixbox fan, I like the package, but it seems to me some other packages may be starting to steal some of the lime light and I like the fact that if I decide to switch packages I can.
This is a jab, but I especially like the fact that freepbx has a backup that works......
GOO FREEPBX!!!
What I don't like in FreePBX
1. For extension it is no choice what to do on busy/no answer/unavailable. It's only voice mail. But I don't want voice mail, I want my own behaviour in such cases. I can do this only via Follow Me. For hundred extensions how many time it will require to configure?
2. Some version before was possibility to enter custom destination string ("context, extension, priority") in ring group, ivr and so on. NOW I need create custom destination with this string at the OTHER PLACE and then choose this destination from list where I need.
If I need to change this string I can't do it easy as before. First I need remove this custom destination from everywhere, after that I'll get ability to change the string and then I need to return back this destination in all places. Is it convenient?
3. FreePBX generates FOP configuration correctly if there are not more than 39 extensions.
4. Backup and restore works as backup and restore at the same server. I wasn't successful to restore config on the another server (on both servers freepbx was updated to latest version).
It would be nice to have separate export/import for each logical unit (trunks, routes, extensions etc.)
Simple task - Secretary phone and incoming queue. Try to configure that secretary phone will ring 10 seconds alone and than 2 additional phones will ring together with secretary one.
You can say use ring group. First of all you can't create ring group "1+2". Okay let it be "1+1+1". If you add this ring group number as a queue agent it will ring only first phone in the list.
So I use mixed way - FreePBX for Ring Groups, IVR, Queues, Conferences, Time Conditions, but I prefer configure call flow between extensions via conf file editing.
First, public congratulation to the entire FreePBX team, both on RC2 and the announcement from Digium. A reference build from Digium will be a huge boom for Open Source Telephony.
'Borispr' thanks for hijacking a thread for your opinion, instead of offering support for the team. You earn the selfish jackass of the week award.
I needed a good laugh... Thanks for providing it...
In just about every case, competition is a good thing. What I am really glad to see is the lack of any conspiracy theorists chiming in here. I am glad because there is no conspiracy in this development. It is simply a recognition by Digium that FreePBX really is THAT good.
